The local community pulls together to save theatre in danger of closure due to Covid-19.

Stamford Shakespeare Company, based at Tolethorpe Hall, are an amateur theatre company who, as all locals will know, put on some of the best performances in the local area. But now, due to Covid-19, the amateur theatre company and registered charity that we all love is under serious threat!

In March, they were forced to make the heart-breaking decision to close their theatre and hall, postponing their summer season until 2021. The theatre company, that solely relies on funding from ticket sales, as they have no funding from arts organisations or formal sponsorship, are still having to pay for the maintenance of the stunning Grade II listed Tolethorpe Hall and its grounds.

Every year, for the past 50-years, resident’s of Stamford and Rutland flood to Tolethorpe Hall for a season of live outdoor theatre where they present two Shakespeare and one non-Shakespeare play. To date, they have welcomed over a million audience members bringing theatre and the arts to a new audience in gorgeous settings.

As of today, Stamford Shakespeare Company has had forecasted losses of over £240,000. However, locals are fighting to keep the charity alive. Audience members have donated pre-purchased tickets back to the company and members of the production teams have organised fundraising events such as marathon runs, apple pies and beautiful portraits with all the money going towards saving our theatre.

As that is what it is. Our theatre. And with that in mind, it is our responsibility to help save it any way we can.

The next fundraising event is the Stamford Shakespeare Company’s Car Boot Sale on the 27th September at Tolethorpe Hall. Having seen some of the donations, it promises to be a fantastic, socially-distanced chance to find a real bargain, and maybe even a hidden gem.

So far, they have managed to raise an incredible £28,475. To donate directly to this great cause, simply follow this link –
