Exercise options for everyone to explore

Perhaps you took Boris’ advice to heed and adopted the daily walk as part of your new and improved lifestyle, or perhaps not? Either way, exercise can become boring when you do the same run, the same routine over and over again. Albert Einstein is widely credited with saying, ‘The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting difference results’. So, reap the rewards both mentally and physically: mix up your routine.

Fortunately, living in the countryside means there are a range of fitness options on your door step. Living in Stamford, you could explore the glorious grounds of Burghley House on foot. Walk, jog, sprint or why not get your four-legged friend involved and try a spot of Cani-cross? If you are close to Peterborough, the Nene parks offer miles of routes through woodland and round lakes with cafes en route for pit-stops.

Group fitness is a fantastic way to refresh your regime, bootcamps are often held outside, whatever the weather! Exercising outdoors has been proven to boost endorphin levels more effectively than indoor exercise, plus, it’s often cheaper or free, so what are you waiting for? Google and see what’s happening near you, taster sessions are often free so make sure you ask to try before you buy.

Gyms and classes have now reopened with covid restrictions being lifted- this could be the perfect opportunity to take the plunge and try that new fitness class you’ve been thinking about. Perhaps outdoor swimming could be your ‘thing’ or for those who aren’t quite ready for the icy temperatures, bikram (hot-flow) yoga is a sure-fire way to improve your flexibility, burn some serious calories and come away feeling fantastic.

Keep checking your local park-run page to see when yours is reopening. Officially beginning from June 5th, groups will start to gradually open. Park run is a fantastic community which welcomes all levels of fitness. Walking, jogging, sprinting, Cani-cross and even running with buggies are all encouraged! Park run is a great way to get the whole family involved in fitness. Stamford’s local course is at closeby Rutland Water whilst Peterborough hosts their event at Ferry Meadows. Be warned, go once and you are sure to catch the bug!

Challenge yourself and try something new this week, beat that lockdown insanity and feel the benefits!
