Local Days Out: Rutland Water Posted On 31 July 2020

Just 10-minutes drive from Stamford is Rutland Water, one of the largest man-made lakes in Europe…

But it’s not just the beautiful lakes and 3,000 acres of beautiful rolling countryside on offer, there are plenty of activities around the lakes, perfect for families, couples and individuals.

Cycling

One of the most popular activities, and one that most Stamfordians have done at some point in their lives, is the 23-mile cycle route. With cycle hire available at Whitwell and Normanton, you won’t even need to bring your own bike. And with some excellent pubs en-route and places for picnics, a cycle ride around Rutland Water is one of life’s little pleasures.

Aqua Park Rutland

If you’re looking for outdoor activities, Rutland Water is the ultimate place in the East Midlands. Aqua Park Rutland is the UK’s biggest inflatable watersports challenge. Doubled in size from 2019, the Aqua Park offers 36 obstacles to climb, slide and splash including ‘The Beast,’ the UK’s tallest inflatable climbing wall.

Sailing and Watersports

Watersports and sailing are two of the prime leisure activities at Rutland Water. With several sailing schools and clubs on the lake, there will be something to suit your experience level. So, if you’re looking to try your hand at windsurfing, sailing and canoeing, with professional tuition and equipment hire available, then look no further…

Nature Reserves

There are two nature reserve centres at Rutland Water: The Anglian Water Birdwatching Centre at Egleton and the Lyndon Nature Reserve. Both are internationally famous reserves where you can discover a huge variety of birds and wildlife and visit the many hides they have. The Birdwatching Centre provides one of the most important wildfowl sanctuaries in Great Britain.

Normanton Church & Fishing

Normanton Church is probably the most famous vista of Rutland Water. Featured in two novels by local authors in the past year: Jonathan Wheatley and Adam Croft, the church is the icon of Rutland Water and used for weddings and special occasions. The Rutland Belle has a jetty here for cruises on the lake. The Waterside café also offers some of the best views of the lake and surrounding countryside.

For fishing enthusiasts, Rutland Water offers some of the best fishing in the UK. With Trout up to 15lbs and huge Pike, the reservoir attracts anglers of all experience levels and plays host to some top-level competitions. You can also obtain your fishing permit from the Vendor Huts at Normanton and Whitwell car parks.
