Big Oxford University project for Stamford Stone Posted On 29 January 2021

Company earns £1.2m contract to supply distinctive limestone

Stamford Stone, a company which has previously contributed to projects at Windsor Castle and the Houses of Parliament, is to play a key role in a multi million-pound development in the heart of Oxford.

They will supply almost 1,500 tonnes of the distinctive Clipsham limestone for the massive Northgate House scheme, which will host a new quad and student accommodation for the centuries-old Jesus College as well as a futuristic digital hub, multi-purpose teaching and learning spaces as well as retail units, café and an exhibition area.

It is a contract worth £1.2million to the Helpston-based business.

More than 8,000, precision-cut pieces of limestone – which will be individually lettered so they can be pieced together in order – will be used to clad the outside of the building, and Dan Wilson, director of Stamford Stone, told the Stamford Mercury: “The Clipsham limestone we excavate from our quarries is the most recognised stone in the area for large scale commercial projects.

“We have worked hard to promote it to be the go-to stone for restoration projects in Oxford and Cambridge over the years, and this work is beginning to pay dividends.

“We are really pleased to be involved in such a high-profile project as this.”

The development, expected to open this autumn, will mark Jesus College’s 450th anniversary and its progress during the first 12 months of construction can be seen in a three minute time-lapse film – Northgate: Shaping the Future of Learning and Interdisciplinary Research – on YouTube.

. Another historic structure closer to home is also having something of a facelift. The Bertie Arms in Uffington, which dates back to 1681, is being completely rethatched at a cost of more than £50,000.

However, the old straw from the listed pub will be put to good use – it will reroof the Copthill School’s Bronze and Stone Age educational huts.
